The David and Alfred Smart Museum, located on the University of Chicagocampus in Hyde Park, is a focal point for the visual arts in Chicago. The Smart Museum is one of the city's most dynamic and innovative institutions in the visual arts area becaue of the scope of its permanent collections: its critically-acclaimed special exhibitions, research and teaching by the University of Chicago scholars; and its nationally-recognized education programs for adults and school-age children.

The Smart Museum and its adjacent Elden Sculpture Garden house over 7,500 works of art and the permanent collection spans more than 5,000 years of
artistic creation. Among the works are Old Master prints by Delacroix, Durer, and Rembrandt; Frank Lloyd Wright furniture; Tiffany glass; modern
sculpture by Degas, Matisse, and Rodin; twentieth-century paintings and sculpture by Arthur Dove, Richard Hunt, Henry Moore, Diego River, and Mark Rothko; classical Greek vases; ancient Chinese bronzes; and medieval sculpture.
